Ritom Power Plant Renovation

Large-Scale Insulation for Steel Hydraulic Structures

In Piotta, Switzerland, the Ritom hydroelectric power plant is undergoing extensive modernization and is also being equipped with a pumped-storage function to flexibly balance out peak loads in the power system in the future. The power plant facilities contribute to stabilizing both the 16.7-Hz traction power grid of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the 50-Hz power grid of the Azienda Elettrica Ticinese (AET).

A particular challenge in steel hydraulic engineering is the construction of an isolation joint with a diameter of more than two meters. This joint must be able to withstand high operating pressures, dynamic load cycles, and corrosive environmental conditions over the long term, while also meeting the highest requirements for operational safety and reliability.

On behalf of DSD NOELL GmbH, ISOFLANGES supplied a large-diameter insulating flange, DN 2200 PN 10.
In close collaboration with DSD NOELL, the isolation point was specifically designed for use within the steel armor of the drive water line to ensure reliable potential separation of the high-performance turbines and pump group; it was engineered and manufactured by ISOFLANGES.
The connection isolates the water medium, remains reliably leak-tight even under dynamic stress, and effectively protects the large-format steel components from corrosion.
